New Hampshire Heat Pump Rebates: The 2026 Guide

First, the Bad News: the Federal Tax Credit Is Gone

For years, the pitch for a heat pump included the federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. That credit expired on December 31, 2025, and a system installed in 2026 does not qualify. Plenty of marketing pages have not caught up; if a website or salesperson promises you that federal credit this year, verify the claim against current IRS guidance.

One leftover: if your heat pump was installed in 2025 or earlier, you can still claim the credit for that tax year — it goes on IRS Form 5695 with your federal return.

NHSaves Rebates Are Still Available

NHSaves is the joint efficiency program run by New Hampshire's electric utilities. Eligibility and required steps depend on the equipment and the heating source being replaced:

• Ducted and ductless heat pumps must meet current equipment specifications and be installed for a customer of a participating utility.
• Replacing electric resistance heat requires pre-verification through NHSaves before installation.
• Central air conditioners and connected thermostats follow their own equipment and application requirements.
• Other efficiency programs may have separate eligibility and participation rules, so confirm which program applies before equipment is ordered.

Why the Existing Heating Source Matters

The existing heating source determines which verification steps apply. A project replacing electric baseboard must be documented and approved before installation, while projects replacing oil, propane, or natural gas follow the program rules for those fuels. Ask the installer to identify the current heat source correctly and confirm eligibility before equipment is ordered.

The Fine Print That Actually Matters

• You must be a customer of Eversource, Liberty, Unitil, or the NH Electric Co-op
• Efficiency minimums apply — not every heat pump on the market qualifies; cold-climate specs matter in NH anyway
• The electric-resistance rebate needs pre-approval — verification through NHSaves before the install, not after
• Deadlines: for the 2026 program year, installation by December 30, 2026, rebate forms postmarked by January 30, 2027
• Cap: 5 tons per account
